UM ACHIEVED ITS BEST EVER POSITION IN THE QS ASIAN UNIVERSITY RANKINGS 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 MAY 2012 – UNIVERSITY of Malaya (UM) reaffirmed its status as the premier university in Malaysia for the fourth year in a row, when it achieved its best ever position in the QS Asian University Rankings 2012, placing 35th overall and the first among all institutions of higher learning in Malaysia, according to the rankings released yesterday.
UM extended its domination as the top university in Malaysia since 2009 when it moved up four places from 39th last year. Since the first QS Asian University Rankings was introduced four years ago, UM has seen a steady improvement in rankings, debuting at 39th before dropping to 42nd and then reverting to its position of 39th place in 2011.
In this year’s Asian rankings revealed by QS, UM achieved an overall score of 71.4 out of a possible 100 and ranked fourth for inbound and outbound student exchange.
It was also ranked number one in Malaysia for academic reputation, employer reputation and the aforementioned inbound student exchange. In terms of faculty areas, UM was ranked number one in Malaysia for all areas including Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, and Social Sciences & Management with the exception of Natural Sciences which saw UM being ranked in second place.
UM’s research values are further reflected by the number of citations received at 17,520. Overall UM produced a total of 9,161 papers from 2007-2011.
“We are delighted and honoured by this year’s ranking as we have done our best to improve in all aspects, especially in the areas of inbound and outbound student exchange,” said Tan Sri Dr. Ghauth Jasmon, Vice-Chancellor of UM.
“This ranking is the result of the outstanding work of our management, staff, students and efforts of our stakeholders and the Ministry of Higher Education in supporting our never-ending quest for excellence.
“Furthermore this ranking justifies the emphasis by the university management on increasing the amount of journal papers and citations which saw a total of 9,161 journal papers produced from 2007 until last year.
“In the overall picture, we are looking at the Asian rankings as the springboard to achieving our ultimate aim of being among the top 100 world ranked university by 2015,” he added.
QS Asian University Rankings represents the most extensive study of Asian institutions ever conducted with almost 500 universities assessed and includes among other things responses to academic and employer surveys conducted by QS.

Apa kata Frank X Barron

(Bringing up the baby).
